CNN-IBN is projecting the BJP to return to power in Gujarat.
While we await the detailed results from the Election Commission, Offstumped focuses on the the big picture of this BJP victory in Gujarat by Narendra Modi.
If?the prognosis by the media and every commentator across the spectrum was that this election was about Modi versus Modi then the results must be interpreted as a strong referendum on the need for a Strong Executive. In fact the?only politician in recent memory who came anywhere close to what Mr. Modi did in Gujarat was Mr. Chandrababu Naidu in Andhra Pradesh.
So where did Modi go right that Naidu went wrong ?
The big difference between Modi and Naidu is that Modi made believers of his electorate in his reform agenda that even his worst detractors admit delivered on its promise while Naidu had few believers outside of Cyberabad. In this sense Mr. Modi has more in common with a Tony Blair and a Nicolas Sarkozy both of who defied conventional wisdom on populism and entitlements to make a majority of the voters believers of their agenda. A feat no Indian Politician has been able to accomplish to date, not even Manmohan Singh who merely pushed policy while failing to build a succesful political platform.
This win is also a strong vote of no-confidence in the mainstream media which has been pushing an anti-Modi agenda as highlighted by Offstumped on multiple occassions. This is a warning signal to the Barkha Dutts, Rajdeep Sardesais, Vir Sanghvis in the media that if they dont bring a sense of balance to their reportage and opinion making the risk losing consumers and sponsors. They cannot expect the people and corporations to subsidize their discredited agendas any longer.
Some in the media from Shekhar Gupta in the Indian Express to Bhupendra Chaubey in CNN-IBN? are attempting?a new spin of absolute “secular consolidation” as a fallout of the Modi victory.
This is absolute bunkum and is a lame attempt by the media to be in the game by raising the bogey of secularism.? The Congress will be in serious denial if it gets carried away by this spin while looking to find a silver lining for its heir-apparent Rahul Gandhi as dark clouds hover over the Sonia Gandhi presidency.
A?hard look at the political reality state by state exposes this spin for what it really is.
A Modi victory will not cause Jayalalitha to back the Congress, will not stop the LDF from fighting the UDF in Kerala, will still make Gowda a political untouchable in Karnataka, will do little to stop the Naidu YSR abuse-fest, will not paper over Chaggan Bhujbal’s enstrangement with Sharad Pawar in Maharashtra, will not cause Naveen Patnaik to embrace the Congress in Orissa, will not make Nitish Kumar best friends with Lalu Yadav, will do little to suppress the ambitions of Mayawati in the heartland or make Mamata forget Nandigram in West Bengal, will not stop the AGP from fighting the Congress in Assam and Om Prakash Chautala from fighting the Congress in Haryana.
So what “secular consolidation” are these idiots fanatasizing over, perhaps one that unites the psuedo-intellectuals across the media to fight for survival as the inevtiable prospect of being rendered irrelevant stares them in the face.
The Modi win in Gujarat sets the stage for an interesting 2008 as Offstumped had predicted earlier in the year that the unraveling of the UPA Left axis of evil will likely beging with?a BJP win in Gujarat.
Offstumped Bottomline: The Narendra Modi victory in Gujarat marks the first succesful battle in the War on Social Justice. Mr. Modi stands out as the first politician in recent memory who defied conventional wisdom on anti-incumbency. He did not pander to special interests, he did not yield to populist temptations. He dared the all pervasive Culture of Entitlment by coming out strongly in favor of the spirit of Enterprise.
His victory amongst other things reflects the deep and fervent desire in a cross-section of the society for a Strong Executive that no longer has the patience for executive paralysis, fragmented legislatures.
This victory is also a vote of non confidence on the leftist agenda pursued by the psuedo-intellectual liberals in the mainstream media.
While this is moment of vindication and celebration for Mr. Modi it is also an opportunity to mend fences and heal wounds from the riots of 2002. Offstumped while congratulating Mr. Modi also calls on him to deliver Justice for all from a position of strength.

Right now, I’m just enjoying Rajdeep Sardesai squirm. The coverage started off with some fantastic theorising about a Congress gain, close finishes etc. Within an hour the smugness was gone!
Rajdeep & Co are now trying to put a brave face on it

Hi Nitin
You missed the fun when Bharat Solanki was discussing about Congress candidate for CM.
Hi Yossarin
This is a spectacular victory by whatever way you look at it
Between IE and Gupta continue to indulge in mischeif on Modi’s ‘CM forever’ remark.Modi had meant CM as Common Man
Prasanna – yep it is spectacular, the media needs to work overtime to stop looking petty and silly
Nitin – yep online but with domestic interest trumping national interest
enjoyed rajdeep make an idiot of himself and yogendra yadav try really hard to sound intellectual.
Landslide win against all odds.Congratulations to all- we bloggers included, who fought against tooth and nail for the values we stand for and against all the odds -EC included.
PI.
yossarin, there in an error “fought against tooth” PL.delete ‘against’.thanks.
In many countries, leaders of parties who lead their parties to electoral drubbings in key states are replaced.
The sad thing is that if you are a Congress party supporter, you can’t even do this.
December 23rd is the new Independence day for India.
Hi Yossarin,
Congrats to Modi and BJP. Forget Congress, it will be a slap on the face for the media, which they rightfully deserve for their biases destroyed the basic ethos of journalism.
I have been regularly following your coverage and analysis on the polls. Your blog posts have been nothing less than excellent, have been entirely objective and always on the point. Congratulations to you for such high standards. And yes, thanks a lot for doing it.
Regards
And thanks to rest of National Interest (Nitin, Sandeep and others) too!
Nitin-
Really the bravado was there till morning. After that evrything changed. Prannoy left the studio in a huff. Barkha has never been so desolate. She has obviously taken it very personally and was almost chiding the Congress leaders for there non performance.Rajdeep with his long face will be sight I will remember for long. And can anyone tell me what was that bet between Chandan and Dua about?
The secular jokers have once again been forced to smite their faces into the ground. This is a victory for what these secular pintellectuals derisively call as the “common man.” That a mere pracharak from the hinterlands of a tiny state out outwits and outguns a whole bevy of entrenched interests is terrific achievement without parallels in recent Indian history. The guy has earned it. Now if only he will answer his higher calling and claim the topmost ‘aasana’ our country has to offer.
Also, great job yossarin. Yours was a voice of sanity and reason amidst the vulgar, motivated media melee. Today is the silent majority’s Diwali and no thanks to guys like you.
does anyone have links to youtube videos which show the downcast faces of the “secular” media ? I missed out since I slept late
.
“Mere pracharak from the hinterlands of a tiny state out outwits and outguns a whole bevy of entrenched interests is terrific achievement without parallels in recent Indian history”
Socal-Beautifully articulated
Mayawati’s achievement in UP too was extra-ordinary but she was not subject to the deliberate demonisation and virulent villification that Modi was subject to.
Word of caution to Modi though. He should not let his guard down for a moment and bask in the glory of this victory for too long. The forces ranged against him are deeply entrenched in the power echelons .They have the means and machinery to hit back at him effortlessely
If he keeps the right company and right advise(Jaitley,Swapan etc),he could go the distance
Hip Hip Hurray
Also great job yossarin.
I think that Modi is more comparable to Putin than to Blair/Sarkozy. Neither Blair/Sarkozy has faced continuous vilification in the media. Neither of them has achieved much economically speaking – although Sarkozy seems to be very promising he still has to deliver. It is Putin who has faced continuous fascist/thug/etc. allegations in the media and has still delivered in terms of development/economy.
As expected Modi won but it is a sad day for Indian democracy.
All thanks to yossarin and bloggers for keeping the inustice to Modi issue alive for the past few months.
Modi is a man for India’s destiny. He has the guts to feel the pulse of the Nation. Godwilling, India will benefit by his leadership.
Right now, the Centre has issued warning of danger and threat to life of Modi and his security has been strengthened
Love and Hate are just the two sides of the coin. If it lies within your power to hate, it equally lies within your power to love. But Congress’s Singhvi would not understand it. On a TV show in the morning, while congratulating Modi for his phenomenal win, he added tersely, this win did not absolve him for his alleged 2002 crimes.
In the eyes of the Gujarat electorate, Modi was not and is not guilty of 2002 crimes. But the law of the land has to pass its clean chit to Modi, as yet. The sooner, the better.
There were number of renowned astrolgers who were publicly predicting Modi’s downfall during this election. They have been proved miserably wrong. They have equally predicted that the new elected Gujarat govt. would be taking its oath of office during inauspicious times [kmurta in Gujarati] and would not last long. Let’s see.
So like Omar Khayyam, we have to believe him, ‘the moving fingure writes, and having writ moves on to write again’.[Words recalled from memory].
Godspeed to Modi when he takes his oath of office for the 3rd time on December 27.
>> Mayawati’s achievement in UP too was extra-ordinary
>> but she was not subject to the deliberate
>> demonisation and virulent villification that
>> Modi was subject to.
>>
Add to that, she wasn’t the incumbent. Although Nitin does argue against the so called “anti incumbency” factor.

Hi All,
Hearty Congradulations on land slide victory of Gujarat –> BJP –> NARANDRA MODI!!!!
It’s really a commendable VICTORY of Modi!
However, the day HE has chosen for the Swearing in Ceremony is NOT AT ALL AUSPICIOUS due to;
1. It is Chaturthi means in astrology RIKTHA TITHHI. Which means ‘Empty’. It becomes Cipher.
2. Especially 4, 9, and 14 (i.t. Chathurthi, Navami and Chaturdashi) being on Thursday is as bad as anything to begin new chapter of governance.
3. I.e. in the current situaion 27th Dec 07 is very bad day astrology point of view.
Can any one convey to him????
Sunita Jois
narendra modi
heartly congratulation we are happy to hear good news from t.v. we won
thank you
The media is still trying to get straws in the wind by discrediting the BJP victory one way or the other. Vinod Mehta is going on an on about the harm that Modi’s win will do to the BJP – that the NDA allies will be now on their guard, etc. Initially there were also attempts to see if the second phase of elections (post the Sohrabuddin comments) was more stronger in favor of BJP than the first phase. But that analysis fizzled out mid-way. (Incidentally, is it true that the Sohrabuddin comment came between the first and second phase?)
And the most laughable one, is how the journos are continuing to harp of “Modi has never made his Prime Ministerial ambitions secret” – to which Praful Goradia had to ask Arnab Goswami – “Did Mr Modi happen to confide that in you?”
One more thing I did not understand about the secular media – while analysis the Gujarat polls all these days, one point which came up was the tribals were unhappy with Modi because in the 2002 riots, they were the ones who had been in the forefront, but now they were languishing in jail and no Hindu leader had come to help them out! This was repeated today by that Neerja (of IE) on one of the channels.
Now this is interesting. It means that people who were responsible for the riots have been apprehended. So why is the media still screaming for Modi’s blood. If these people had not been in jail, they would have still criticised Modi. Now that they are in jail, they use them as reasons as to why Modi would fail in the tribal belt.
Of course, thankfully, none of that happened!
See Sheela Bhatt’s analysis on Rediff.
Today just when the counting began, we heard news about the Centre alerting a suicide attack threat by the Lashkar-e-taiba on Narendra Modi due to which security was beefed up.
Immediately, one of the channels put up an explanation that the Lashkar was wanting to attack Modi for his Sohrabuddin remarks.
Interesting there? Looks like the Lashkar, the Congress, the mainstream secular media are all on one side! Great company!
Indian mainstream media will not earn anything and in that way is helping India to go downwards.
Now also they are telling that terorisn is an emotive issue, how much irresponsible have they become!
It is a serousissue and people take it serously so they have voted modi with lanside victory.
When they will consider terorism is a bigest threat of India after complete suffering!

The most Hilarious Assesment of Media is Advani is MODERATE….and MODI would not be acceptable to BJP allies……
IN 90,till 2007 THESE SAME GUY were saying ADVANI is Harliner AND is NOT acceptable to Allies…..
In nutshell….it will go on and on and on by our Secular Media,Intellectual guys.
Narendra Modi deserves his party’s win in spite of the fact that complete media was against him.
CONGRATULATIONS TO MODI AND HIS TEAM
hey narendra modi is back once again its great, isnt it!his decisiveness has won him election.he won election on his ability and not by criticising his opponents..
i feel like india just beat pakistan
it’s good news if the win is really based on his development plank..
So called Secular Media should bury it’s head in sand….
“i feel like india just beat pakistan”
Don’t know about that, but India sure got the best of Italy and the anglophone media. And when your rivals like Vinod Mehta and Shekhar Gupta start worrying about you, it’s a sure sign that you’re on right track.
Grace is a precious commodity, especially in face of defeat. The secularists are being sore loser in doubting the developmental aspect of Modi’s victory or shedding fake tears over democracy. Ah, but then, some people never learn…and are condemned to repeat their mistakes.
Another encouraging aspect of this election is that no amount of spin put up by the Congress lackeys in media seem to influence the wise folks of this country. UP did it and now Gujarat repeated it. Twice cannot be a coincidence. But we do need an alternate credible media. Fourth estate is proving to a fifth column and that portends trouble. Perhaps a thousand yossarins will bloom from this catch-22 scenario.
Nitin,
Sheela Bhatt’s column gets almost everything wrong. The biggest error she makes is when she claims, Modi played the “caste card” – by pitting caste against caste – or such nonsense.
These elections prove that caste alone, in the absence of whimsical concrete benefits at the pleasure of politicians, has little electoral relevance. The much anticipated Leuva Patel mobilization did not happen. The tribals did not desert Modi and the Kolis did not gel around any benefits. The free colour TV scheme (copied from DMK) became a laughing matter in Gujarat.
Remove the “whimsical” part from social justice and watch both true democracy and true social justice bloom in other states as well.
[...] Modi Wins Gujarat Election good or bad ? Interesting article and comments here : Gujarat Polls 2007 – Narendra Modi wins | Offstumped [...]
wonderful blog.Great to see different view points.Narendra Modi winning the elections was a foregone conclusion .The humiliation the media satraps have suffered will be remembered for a long time. The way the initial trends were convereted into a congress victory were all so comical. And to top it Son of Bofors Solanki was asked about his willingness to lead the state in the event of congress winning the elections. What a shame. The CNN’s and NDTV’s head honchos are responsible for communalsing the election and post election scenario.
Human Rights and Civil Society Activist have now started their propaganda campaign.
Father Cedric Prakash told IANS, “It is a wake up call for all of us to be more concerned and responsive to issues of human rights”
A CHRISTIAN Missionary whose CHURCH funds the Militants in the north east has the cheek to talk of human rights.
Noted human rights activist Teesta Setalvad said, “No matter what the results are, we will continue with our work. Our efforts to get justice for the victims of communal violence in Gujarat will continue unabated.”
Why is that these so called HUMAN right activists obsessed with Modi ,why dont they try to single out who is behind the ethnic cleansing in Jammu & Kashmir and the perpetrators of the Sikh Riots
Why are these wastrals given so much media coverage ?
Congrata to Mr.Narendra modi and also thankful to all gijaraties in all over the world.
“So called Secular Media should bury it’s head in sand….”
More like take their heads out of their arses. Where else would the truckloads of horseshit that they are hawking as “analysis” come from? The kool-aid of secularism isn’t working anymore. And the people seem able to be making a clear distinction between a leader and a speech reader. The bubble boy Rahul awaits similar, unpleasant fate.
“Why are these wastrals given so much media coverage ?”
Because people like you and I keep subsidising their publicity campaigns by buying their garbage? If you don’t like it, don’t buy it. They have their personal choice why not exercise yours and vote with your wallets?
congrats to modigii
public has been blinded in the past with the personas of their leaders(hitler, mussolini?). right now the gujratis feel modi is one of them so they like to overlook his shortcommings. just like a mother hides the cruel acts of his son. someday a few years from now.. something will give or somebody close to modi will spill the guts about modis’ involvement in the riots.
the term ‘secularism’ that the meadia has grossly overused now just makes every1 annoyed on hearing/reading it. but what lies under is no high intellectualism but just the idea of ‘unity’.. about the oneness of all my countrymen.
but anyways who are still smitten by modi’s charm … you will soon realize he is also a politician .. like anyone else… he wants to stay in power for as long as possible and would say/ deny saying anything that he might or might not have said or might or might not believe in.
politicians are tounges for hire .. these tounges are the most dangerous when they actualy get the power to make believe in what they are saying.
modi has found that ability so is able to move masses and made them believe in what he is saying. but the catch is that when modi(or any other politician) is talking about development and tries to take credit he should be reminded it was his dammn job in the first place and if he just kept doing that and not poke his nose in religion then he would not have to cover his rear with the curtain of development.
so please wake up. and read over again ther bullshit above i wasted 15 mins of my life typing.
I remember reading Vinod Mehta somewhere that the credibility of media is like virginity of a women which both can afford to lose only once. A large share of English media has decisively lost its credibility while reporting the Gujarat elections. Thank you Yossarin for brilliantly exposing the scum that this neo colonial English media is.
The Congress, the Left and the Indian media are in a state of perpetual delusive contentment and that explains both the ungracefulness of the congress in accepting defeat and the obduracy of the media in accepting the fact that they were always living in a fools paradise. It was really funny to hear the predictable response of these pseudo secular, uneducated literates – and witness them stutter on the same old theme of polarisation, propaganda and non-inclusiveness – when the results, on all accounts, indicated otherwise.
Congrats to the BJP and Modiji. Hope
“ab dilli door nahin”..!!!
Great Job Guys as usual.I have been lurking here for some time but posting for the first time. Its a great day for all the ‘right’ minded people.Lets rejoice.
Lalloo, Mulayam, (and Karunanidhi to a smaller extent) should be the most worried men in India today. For the first time there has emerged a non-brahmin leader who has made caste all but irrelevant. Just as Mayavati has junked the blowhards like Paswan and built up a broad based alliance of people, Modi has defeated the vicious caste based mobilisation of the Congress (a mechanism that Yoginder Yadav, Yoginder Siknad, Lalloo and Co. drool over). If the BJP can repeat this in Karnataka and AP where the Congress has played off the two dominant communities (Vokkaliga vs. Lingayat and Kamma vs. Reddy) and making up the balance with communal pandering, the BJP may well be able to build a new truly Indian constituency. Every commie/leftie hack all these months has been banking on the old caste magic coming back into play. Vidya Subramaniam, Smita Gupta, the entire IBN/Hindu/NDTV gang and other idiots like Praful Bidwai had all but called this election for the Congress. A big order of crow and the house for all these chumps. Even earlier today when the results had just started to trickle in Prannoy Roy was slavering over the “reverses” of the BJP and chuckling over it with Kapil Sibal. When will these guys ever learn? And why is Sonia not accepting defeat as AICC/UPA chairman? Lese majeste?
Hey Yossarin,
Great coverage on the whole Gujarat elections (and glad to see comments are back)….keep it up..
While BJP and right of center should celebrate the irrelevance English media when it comes informed decisions on election day, I think Gujarat, just like any other state, is different from other states.
BJP needs a state by state strategy to take back 2008 elections, put left wing Congress I in its place, and return some sanity to governance in the nation.
