The Rashtriya Swayamsewak Sangh (RSS) on Saturday asked the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) to refresh themselves on Integral Humanism propounded by the Jana Sangh ideologue Deendayal Upadhyay.
The remarks were made by RSS chief K C Sudarshan at a book release function in which BJP?s prime ministerial candidate L K Advani and several other BJP leaders were present.
In this post Offstumped revists the idea of?Integral Humanism originally propounded in 1965 and contrasts with its formulation of Flat World Hindutva.
It is clear that as with many other things most public debate on Integral Humanism has been conducted on the basis of crude generalisations and vulgar oversimplifications. So we have this rather familiar situation where Integral Humanism is known more for what it is against than for what it stands for.
Any objective reappraisal of Integral Humanism must account for the day and age it was articulated and the generation that propounded it.
Such a reappraisal must seek to distill the essence of the ideas which are eternal while avoiding the trap of getting caught up in the commonly held prejudices of that age and generation.
So this attempt by Offstumped will focus on the substance of the ideas propounded in 1965 while not allowing itself to be distracted by anecdotal trivia.
Dr Upadhyay begins his articulation by recounting the state of the Nation in 1965 and the general atmosphere of lack of confidence in the institutions of the state. He does so by discussing the history of democracy and nation states especially in Western Europe. While examining this discussion it is tempting to dismiss it away as an anti-western tirade but one must look beyond the obvious to appreciate what Dr. Upadhyay is getting at. He is setting up the debate here by highlighting the failures and limitations of the dominant western schools of thought.
He then goes on to further set the debate with a discussion on the inherent limits of these schools of thought to be universally applied. He then goes on to elaborate on that which is unqiue about the Indian context by relating it to the ancient past and the salient aspects of our culture.
This discussion is important for it is here that he subtly introduces the notion of? Dharma as a “Moral Compass” to guide on contemporary issues (social, political, economic and personal) much like Flat World Hindutva. Dr. Upadhyay attempts to critique and contrast why the Indian notion of Dharma is more wholistic by drawing parallels to western ideas.
Once again it is easy to trivialise the discussion here as being anachronistic or illiberal in its criticism of western notions of materialism.
But then let us reflect here for a moment on how the clock has turned a full circle in the West with every increasing focus on Social Responsibity of Businesses, Corporate ethics and?of course “Green Consumption”.
It is in this spirit that the notion of Dharma as a moral compass ought to be appreciated.
The next Chapter in the discussion on Integral Humanis is seminal for it debates at length the role of Dharma. Before we examine this it must be said that there is an anecdote stereotyping Muslims based on a prejudice.
It would be a great tragedy to dismiss away the intellectual worth of the entire chapter on the basis of this stray anecdote which is neither reflective of the rest of the discussion nor of any consequence as far as Integral Humanism goes.
Dr. Upadhyay begins the discussion with the notion of what constitutes the soul of a nation to highlight how Dharma is what sustains the society and nation. Dr. Upadhyay also makes an important distinction between the Institution of “State” which he deems as temporal and the notion of a Nation with these observations
One of the major reasons for the problems of the present day world is that almost everyone thinks of the state to be synonymous with the society. At least in practice. they consider the state as the sole representative of the society. Other institutions leave declined in their effectiveness while the state has become dominant to such an extent that all the powers are gradually being centralized in the state.
This distinction is important for in it is a repduiation of “Statism”. Further along in the discussion we will also see how it comes down in strongly in favor of liberal ideas of freedom for local communities.
A discussion on the eternal nature of Dharma follows with these remarks
Dharma is the repository of the nation’s soul. If Dharma is destroyed. the Nation perishes. Anyone who abandons Dharma betrays the nation.
This in a nutshell sums up what Integral Humanism is all about – the notion of Dharma as a moral compass that sustains the nation by giving it a sense of “Right” from “wrong”. Integral Humanism and Flat World Hindutva are premised on the same fundamental idea.
Dr. Upadhyay then goes on to make an important distinction on why Dharma must not be confused with religion with a clear repudiation of a Theocratic State. Dr. Upadhyay’s nation based on Integral Humanism is a minimally secular, non-theocratic state much like Flat World Hindutva.
Next Dr. Upadhyay critiques Federalism as enshrined in the Constitution. This again can become a bone of contention if interpreted too literally. But if one examines the substance of his argument it becomes clear that Integral Humanism is firmly in favor of a decentralized state that empowers local communities with the freedom to be in control of their destiny. Dr. Upadhyay problems with Federalism have more to do with parochial identity politics that view linguistic groups as Nations themselves thus encouraging secessionist tendencies.
A unitary State does not mean concentration of all powers in the Centre…. a unitary State does not mean a highly autocratic centre…The authority will be distributed to the lowest level, and will be fully decentralized. At the same time, all these entities of power will be centred around the unitary State. This arrangement will embody Dharma.
Dr. Upadhyay goes on to further argue why a State based on Dharma would not be statist while highlighting the nature of a true democracy that embodies Dhama by being “for the people”.
The final chapter addresses questions of Individual Freedom and Socio-Economic Choice. This is where Integral Humanism is at its weakest.
?The bulk of the discussion focuses on criticising Capitalism (to mean unethical pursuit of profit) and Socialism. Where Integral Humanism is clear in its rejection of unethical pursuit of profit and statist approaches of socialism, it is unclear on how Dharma must guide on on socio-economic choice.
“Social Responsibility” emerges as a recurring theme.? Other ideas that emerge are “Right to Work” and concerns of machines displacing labor. Where Integral Humanism comes out clearly against monopolies and unethical business practices, it is less than coherent on its alternatives.
But then Dr. Upadhyay’s Integral Humanism got its moral bearings “Right” when it laid out 2 fundamental principles for evolving an economic alternative – “Swadeshi” and “Decentralization”. With “decentralisation” Integral Humanism is advocating a liberal view on leaving it upto local communities to make “socio-economic choices” while guarding against “Statist Monpolies”. On “Swadeshi” one must take it in a “positive” sense as Dr. Upadhyay himself argues. His emphasis is not on “protectionism” but on creating a strong economic foundation that reduces dependency on foreign aid.
Dr. Upadhyay closes with these remarks which must be appreciated for their forward thinking
we still have to discard the status-quo mentality and usher in a new era. Indeed our efforts at reconstruction need not be clouded by prejudice or disregard for all that is inherited from our past. On the other hand, there is no need to cling to past institutions and traditions which have outlived their utility.
Offstumped Bottomline: In Dr. Upadhyay’s Integral Humanism we see the underpinnings of a school of thought with the notion of Dharma as the overarching moral compass. It clearly repudiates Statism and Theocracy, while standing up for Decentralization to uphold the twin pillars of Individual Freedom and National Interest.
The intellectual rut the BJP finds itself in can only be explained in the failure to extend and apply the abstract ideas of Integral Humanism to contemporary issues in a coherent and consistent manner. Offstumped’s articulation of Flat World Hindutva must be viewed in this spirit.

Nice post. Though it is intrigunig as to how RSS and BJP have such frugal literature on their core ideology. Further very little of “integral humanism” is articulated by BJP though it is Party’s official party doctrine since 1965 i.e. the Jana Sangha days. In popular perception the Party remains associated with communal/pseudo-secular issues, to a large extent and cultural nationalism (which admittedly is a part of integral humanism), to a lesser extent. The blame for this can not be laid entirely on misinterpretations by “secularists” or ELM as Party itself has shown a less than enthusiastic response to the propagation of its official ideology.
I entirely agree with your understanding of “Dharma as the moral guide” and “nation” vs “state” distinctions, lucidly explained by Deendayalji, in Integral Humanism. I also agree that its weekest exposition is that of the economic issues. However, the “harmony between the classes” as opposed to the “class conflict”, argued by Deendayalji was an important improvisation to confront the increasingly deteriorating industrial relations under militant trade unionism.While Communist trade unions have militant slogans like “Jo humse takrayega choor choor ho jaayega”, BMS, the RSS affiliated trade union ( also the largest trade union as on date) had a more constructive slogan “Desh ke hit mein karenge kaam, kaam ke lenge poore daam”.

All this is fine but why blame only BJP?? Does RSS has any common sense?? These bunch of duffers can’t even realize that Hindutva is more about India in its entirety, it is basically Indian culture for the good of India. The baniyas are one of main sponsorers of BJP and RSS and all that comes into PDS meant for distribution for poor is sold in black market while RSS keeps silent and this is what they call Hindutva – for Hindus ?? Doesn’t RSS know all these?? Jayalalitha has quite a good number of court cases against her (100 or so if I remember correctly) but has managed to dodge judiciary for 10-15 years-courtesy the sangh parivar.
She throws a few rotten biscuits (all illgotten) to these bunch of idiots and they are happy to defend her turf. UP election incharge was in the hands of RSS but after the defeat the RSS pointsman Rajnath Singh never allowed this to be debated. why? lest the mistakes of RSS comes into open. If these people don’t have the courage of conviction why bother taking responsibility. Just like the Chinese Policy Mouthpiece in India CPI(M) which enjoys power without responsibility so is RSS on the other side of the line. What Mukesh Ambani and Mittal are following is the “dialectical materialism” variant of capitalism and not the sort of capitalism as espoused by original Bharatiya “Dharma”. The Vedic “dharmasatta”, which is the guiding force of Deendayalji’s IH stipulates only a proportion of ones own income to be spent on himself. “Vedic Dharma” earmarks major share for philanthropy to various instittutions of the society. In India this should have been promoted further as one can see that people who are reluctant to part away their earnings to a corrupt administration in the form of taxes are more than happy to spend them on philanthropy in various forms.
Anyway even the capitalism of Mittals and Ambanis is better than Communism-which is infact state capitalism promoting monopoly, inefficiency and corruption or Socialism which means nepotist capitalism of a select few.At least in the 4500 crore project which Ambani is alleged to have build for himself many would have got empolyment opportunites and the money comes in circulation. Better than that black money lying stuffed in overseas Banks, of those who have looted the society in the name of Socialism.

If Sudarshan and Co want Hindus to produce more kids then they will have to first tell who will take care of the families of the poor ppl producing more kids later when they have problems (as if we dont have any now)—- Sudharshan, any other Pracharak or Togadia or who? Who will feed those poor Hindu families?? I am not hating RSS but am telling the readers that there is a lot of gap between what RSS tells and what it follows. RSS no doubt is not a political party but RSS can bring down BJP and decimate it if it wants to. RSS people are the foot soldiers of BJP. BJP can’t survive for long if RSS goes against it.
As far your comment that the organization as a whole shouldn’t be blamed for the actions of a few black sheep: In general I agree with that principle but I blame the whole of RSS for its lack of vision, discipline, a rational attitude. How many times have to seen RSS talking about removal of corruption ?? if you see their actions and match with their words there is no corelation, they are discordant. If RSS puts its foot down and tells BJP that it won’t tolerate corrupt politicians in the party, BJP will come to a compromise. But for that first RSS has to clean up its house or else their own rotten skeletons will tumble down and that is the reason they hardly talk about it.
If you are an RSS member please do raise these issues and see what kind of answer you get from your leaders. At best they will tell you it is impractical or national security it more imp and at worst they will snub you.
