Politics and Public Policy in India

Shivraj Patil must be fired

The Union Home Minister Shivraj Patil has once again reminded us why he is an item, with these remarks.

Speaking in his home town Latur, Maharashtra, Patil told reporters that if political parties are demanding the hanging of Afzal Guru for his conviction in the December 13, 2001 Parliament attack case then India would lose the right to ask Pakistan to pardon Sarabjit Singh.?

“People are saying that don’t hang?an Indian in Pakistan, Sarabjit and then are demanding hanging of a Pakistani, Afzal Guru…this is not fair,” said Patil.

If that was outrageous, these remarks by Oily Moily took the Patil line further

Congress spokesperson Veerapa Moily said, “We cannot hang Afzal Guru?to please the BJP. There a set of rules and guidelines laid in our constitution and we have to follow them.”

Here is why both Patil and Moily are wrong.

Afzal Guru?is not a Pakistani. That the Union Home Minister is not even aware of the basic facts of the case is inexcusable.

Afzal Guru is a known terrorist and the factual evidence against him for aiding and abetting terrorism is incontrovertible

Afzal Guru’s convinction and death sentence have been upheld by the highest court in India and not some Kangaroo Court in Pakistan where Judges are held in House Arrest at the whims and fancies of the Government of the Day.?

The Supreme Court while upholding the Afzal Death Sentence made it abundantly clear in its reasoning why the December 13th attack on Parliament was an act of war on the Indian State and why it merited the rarest of rare punishments provided for by the Indian Constitution. The Supreme Court also made it abundantly clear that the clemency powers vested in the President on the advise of the Cabinet are not beyond judicial review.

The case agains Sarabjit Singh is immaterial to the Afzal execution for it does not reduce the magnitude of the crime committed by Afzal nor does it change any of the material facts in his case to be considered as grounds for Clemency. By tying the Judicial Process in India to events in Pakistan, gutless wonder Shivraj Patil is treading dangerous territory here which should be grounds for contempt of court and even treason.

Offstumped Bottomline: Union Minister Shivraj Patil has reminded us once again that he lacks the intellectual clarity and the moral certitude expected of the high office he holds. Sarabjit Singh’s hanging is immaterial to the Afzal Guru Death sentence. By attempting to draw a moral equivalence between the two Shivraj Patil has equated the Judicial Process in India with the Kangaroo Courts in Pakistan. This should be grounds enough to hold Shivraj Patil in contempt of court and fire him from the Union Cabinet.

“…some exceptions ofcourse like the sikhs in 1984…”

Congress created the biggest terror on HIndus and India in 1947, when they partitioned the nation to appease muslims. 30% territory of India were given to 22% people to creat Islamic nation. Over two millions of Hindus got killed in this process, and created mankinds biggest human migration. Millions of HIndus became homeless over night and had to leave their millenia old place of residences. Hindus and sikhs were ethncially cleansed, while muslims were allowed to stay in partitioned India.

Congress ignored the voice of opposition to partition to 80% Indians (Hindus), and gave concent to 20% Indians (muslims) to create seeprate Islamic nation.

55% areas of J&K gifted to Pakistan and China by the Congress, and surrendered Tibet to China. Result Tibetans are homeless today. J&K was kept out of total unification by special provision (Article 370), only to driven out Hindus from there. Today, about 5 lakhs (half million) Kashmiri Hindus are living as refugees, in their own country. Till 1989, there were about 5 lakhs Hindus in Kashmir Valley, now less than 10,000.

Story didn’t ends there. After partitioned independence, Congress continued to pander muslims and today has reached to its zenith. Now, muslim reservations, Sachar report for special treatment, no law to fight terrorism to appease muslims, and marginalization of Hindus.

Congress massacred over thousands of innocent Hindus, muslims in Neli and other places in Asom (Assam) in 1980s, just for their power and vote-banks.

Over 5000 Sikhs were massacred in just three days across the nation in 1984, 3000 alone in the heart of the nation, Delhi. Rajiv fake Gandhi justified the massacre, by saying when big tree falls, earth/ground shakes. Manmohan Singh declared in New Delhi loksabha constituency (where he was a candidate against VK Malhotra), sikhs were killed by the BJP and RSS. He got a lession, sikhs dumped him in the election. Khusawant Singh said, RSS and BJP people saved the life of many sikhs.

Story is endless. India to be developed, secure and peaceful nation, Congress have to be removed. Else, suffering is our only option.

I don’t think all this noise created on Patil’s statement will cause any major impact on people on the whole. We Indians are used to being callous in our attitude towards human lives. We don’t respect soldiers/policemen who sacrifice their lives serving our nation. And politicians go from us and represent the majority and they are no different from common man in terms of attitude. The death of innocents in Jaipur blasts will soon be forgotten as it has been with previous blasts. Politicians always have easy bait like religion, caste, reservation, Colour TV etc., to use at the time of elections rather than bigger issues like national security or people’s safety.

    Ravi,

I’ve heard arguments of the sort you make above ad nauseum from otherwise well-meaning folk. Sure, we all have ups and downs and mood swings but your position appears to promote despair for lack of any alternatives.

My response is, look not at where we are today but at where we are going. Look not at a frozen static picture but at the direction of flow. Tell me if you continue to see nothing but darkness is India’s destiny, even now?

Don’t forget that Bharat is only now emerging from centuries of subjugation, loss and deprivation. Only now are we reclaiming what was always ours (our heritage, our values and culture, our folklore and history) without being apologetic about it. Only now are we realizing the miracle that India was and is. A few decades down, if we hold together the country, we would be among the world’s top 3 in any terms you care to name – demography, polity, society, technology, economy, military…. (anything but per capita, of course).

And thats where the challenge lies. Some great man (MK Gandhi?) once said “No one can make you feel inferior without your consent”. So why continue to look only for the worst trends and not the hopeful ones? Why spread despair as if it is India’s eternal fate? Surely, we can do better!

    JMTPs and IMVVHOs.
    /Have a nice day, all.

    Home tragedies

    Fri, 23 May, 2008 , 04:04 PM
    .

India has ine of the most feckless Union Ministers ever in the form of Shivraj Patil, who has been able to hold on to his Home Ministry only due to his blind loyalty to Sonia Gandhi.

Patil was put in the saddle despite his incapacity to win his parliamentary seat in the Lokh Sabha elections in 2004.

Right from day one, he has proved that he is a total misfit for the post he is holding.

And even those who had some soft corner for his low-key style would have felt ashamed after hearing what he had said two days back.

The Home Minister said that India couldn’t execute the hanging of the dreaded terrorist Afzal Guru, as it is fighting for the release of Sarabjit Singh from the Pakistani gallows.

The Congress Party, which never fails to exhibit its fake nationalism, has stood behind the Home Minister rock solid, attesting and approving his statement. The allies and the outside supporters have also not opened their mouth.

Afzal and Sarabjit are both Indian nationals and while Afzal has been caught, tried and convicted by the highest judicial authority, the Supreme Court of India, for attacking Parliament, the heart of Indian Democracy, after due process of law, Sarabjit has been caught by the Pakistani authorities on a mistaken identity, tried by a ‘religious’ law in a fake-democratic country, forcefully converted to Islam and has been languishing in the prison for the last 18years.

While the secularists and the minorities are demanding the commutation of Afzal’s death sentence on the grounds of mercy just because he happens to be a ‘Muslim’, the wife of Sarabjit has courageously said that her husband need not be freed in exchange of a terrorist at the cost of India’s security.

While the secular brigade has shown scant regard for the lives of thousands of innocents who have been killed by Afzal and the likes, Sarabjit’s wife is prepared to sacrifice her husband for the safety of her co-citizens.

The entire secular brigade comprising the UPA Chairperson, Prime Minister, Home minister, the Cabinet, alliance groups, Left parties must fall at the feet of the ‘Brave Mother’, the wife of Sarabjit Singh, and learn a lesson or two in patriotism and national interest.

Had it been another country, such a Home Minister would have been sacked on the spot. But nothing of that sort has happened and instead the whole government is rallying behind him.

Any way, what else can this nation expect from a government, which loses its sleep on the plight of the families of terrorists and terror suspects and goes into deep slumber over the predicament of the families of terror victims?

Is this government going to release Afzal in the event of Sarabjit’s release? Is this government going to stop investigations and allow terror blasts to happen till Sarabjit is released?

Does this government have the guts to hang Afzal if Pakistan refuses to release Sarabjit Singh? Has Shivraj Patil read his own Ministry’s annual report? Is he the ‘Home Minister’ for India or Pakistan?

Shivraj Patil has equated a terrorist and an innocent; he has equated democracy and military autocracy; he has equated Constitutional Law and Religious Law; he has equated crime and innocence; he has equated India and Pakistan and he has insulted Indians.

Indians can survive sans a Home Minister like him. He doesn’t have the moral or any other right to continue in office. He must leave ‘Home’ and get back to his home.

  10. Krishna says:

A total misfit ( Editorial from Asian Age):

It is better to remain silent and be seen as ignorant than open your mouth and prove it. So runs a comment by an old wit. We fear that given the proven tendency of our honourable Union home minister Shivraj Patil to perpetrate gaffes, the cynical saying will soon become applicable to him. The minister can earn high marks in any fashion show for sartorial excellence, but regrettably he is earning a dubious notoriety for provoking controversies by saying the wrong things at the right time. A controversial minister is not such a rare commodity in democracies and is usually respected for daring to project an unpopular point of view. But what is one to say of a minister, that too one entrusted with the crucial home affairs portfolio in a country as diverse and complex as India, who provides frequent instances of being afflicted with “foot-in-mouth” disease. While his earlier gaffes could be forgiven since they only showed him up, his latest comments equating the cases of Sarabjit Singh facing a death sentence in Pakistan with that of Afzal Guru given the ultimate punishment by the Supreme Court in India are both irresponsible and unwarranted. Mr Patil has questioned the logic of demanding mercy for Sarabjit while commending the execution of Afzal Guru. The home minister, of all people, ought to be aware of the patent dissimilarities in the two cases and the sheer inappropriateness of linking them. Even the Pakistani authorities have conceded the possibility of Sarabjit’s case being one of mistaken identity and, in a welcome response to New Delhi’s plea for a humanitarian approach, his release is under earnest consideration. Mr Patil’s comment could well send the wrong signals to Islamabad. Afzal Guru’s offence of active involvement in the terrorist attack on Parliament House is a proven one with the Supreme Court repeatedly rejecting his petitions for a review of the death sentence. The two cases are as different as chalk and cheese, and for the country’s home minister to advocate a position that runs against national interests is totally unacceptable. Afzal Guru’s mercy petition is pending in Mr Patil’s ministry and hence he cannot even plead ignorance of the facts of the case. There have been numerous instances during the last four years of UPA rule where Mr Patil has proved himself to be a total misfit for the office he holds. It is up to the Prime Minister to review the justification of retaining him in that post.

Shuvraj Patil is a totally insensitive congressi die hard chamcha. Since he came into power Police has unleashed hell on several occasions on people who ever protested against anything. Eg ,Gurgaon case,Reservation case etc.

The reason why he abolished POTA is due to soft corner of congress towards Muslims ,These congressis are the one who imposed TADA which was an extreme version of POTA that too against Sikhs ,but his reply on NDTV interview was that that situation was different .

One reason y congress support muslimi s not about its so called secularism but infact its deep muslim roots and fake gandhi surname ,They are not hindus but muslims after Indira married Feroz khan and renamed him gandhi, thats a long story u could search on internet urself

He is also dead against Sikhs ,this was clear when discussion was held in Parliament regarding 84 pogrom ,instead of a single word of condolence he said” HAmari ma mari thi ,ham hain sypathy ke layak ,hamare liye bhi socho” ,koi puche ise ki jo maa iske ghar bethi hai wo kiski hai fir, such a chamcha he is.
